The facelifted fifth generation Ibiza is an attractive contender in the supermini segment. It goes toe-to-toe with the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Ford Fiesta.

With a thumb nail, or a small screwdriver with a flat-headed head (A) lift upwards the key fob battery compartment cover (B). Replace the CR2025 batteries, making sure it is placed in the proper direction.

Dead Coin Battery

A dead battery on a coin is the most common cause of a key fob not locking or unlocking your vehicle. It usually displays signs before it dies like a lower range or no power at all. It is easy to replace with a brand new one (CR2025) from an area supermarket. Be aware that faulty or defective batteries could damage the key fob. Make sure that the new battery has identical in size, specifications and voltage as your old one.

If your device has been exposed to pure water, such as rainwater or soapy water from the tap it is possible that corrosion has damaged the electronic chip. You could clean the chip with isopropyl or electronic cleaners to see if that can help, but that the chip is fried.

The most simple solution is to get a new key fob. Most major car dealers offer them and they can be installed by a skilled mechanic. They can also be purchased on the internet from sites like ebay. The best thing to do is to work on a level surface with excellent lighting. It makes it easier to work with the small parts. This will also allow you to avoid putting something back in the wrong place. Always work on your key fob in an area that is safe and secure.

Water Damage

You may think that your key fob is lost if you drop it into the pool or accidentally wash it. There's a chance. When the circuit board on the fob is exposed to water, it transforms into an electrical conductor, which shorts the components. It also speeds up corrosion and rust.

This is a simple solution. Find something absorbent to put inside the fob. A tissue or paper towel would work well. Then apply an alcohol-soaked cotton swab and a cotton swab isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the circuit board and other components to get rid of any residues of acid from batteries and contamination. The fob should dry for a few days in a warm and dry environment.

Replace the battery after the fob is dry with a fresh one that has the same dimensions and polarity ('+' (pointing upwards). Radio Interference

A few aftermarket LED lighting fixtures that uses the same frequency as the remote key fob may interfere with the signal and stop it from reaching the receiver modules. To prevent interference, the LED lights should be turned off or to a different frequency.

If the problem persists after installing a new battery, the antenna of the key fob might be damaged or not functioning properly. The antenna is responsible for transmitting a signal between the key fob and the receiver module. An OBDII scan can help diagnose the problem by telling you exactly what's wrong with the system. The scanner will ask you for details about your vehicle, including the make, model and engine type as well as the VIN number.

Faulty Receiver Module

The key fob has the receiver module which transmits the signals to lock and unlock. If the receiver module is damaged then all the on-board electronics will cease to function. If this is the case, reprogramming with an OBDII scanner or replacing the key fob itself may help.

This issue can be caused by a dead coin cell battery or water damage, or signal interference. It is possible to reset the on-board computer if you disconnect the 12 Volt batteries for 15 mins. A defective fuse for the antenna module could also be the cause. This is the fuse that transmits a signal to the vehicle to lock or unlock. Depending on the model the fuse can be located in one of several locations like the engine bay, side of the dashboard, under the rear seat leon key, or in the trunk.
